Well, from what it sounds like, running out of gas has very little, if nothing, to do with this thing. If oil gets into airbox, you either have overfilled with oil or you have lots of blow-by. I am afraid it didn't actually run out of gas but it might even have seized. That would explain the blow-by.
My suggestion is to first check your oil. Too much means obviously overfilling, too little might be reason to seizing. Even if the oil's okay, do check the compression or have it tested somewhere.
